To love! To life! Fiddler on the Roof…A Preview of the Fresh & Funny Broadway Classic.

The US national tour of the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof  is making it’s way to East Lansing and will be hosted by Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Fiddler on the Roof started it’s 2018 season strong and is bringing with it a performance that is beautiful, funny, stirring, and “electrifying” (The New York Times). The Broadway Classic returned in 2015 and was given new life through fun, fresh singing and dancing. Within it’s story line the themes of love, family, community, tradition and change hit close to the heart of modern America and we could not be more excited to take this journey with the cast of Fiddler on the Roof when it comes to town next week.

Fiddler on the Roof

If you are not familiar with the original story of Fiddler on the Roof you are in for a night of heart warming dialogue capturing the importance and meaning of family, community, love and resilience. The story brings us into the home of a poor Jewish milk man, Tevye, along with his wife and five daughters in a village in Tsarist Russia during the eve of a revolution. Tevye is deeply rooted in tradition and Jewish religion. His daughters hope for love and desire to marry men that they have chosen and avoid the arranged marriages that have been prepared.

Fiddler on the RoofHis daughters’ desire for change and their forward thinking clashes with the tightly held traditions of the time and the immutability of Jewish law, causing a rift within their family. This all takes place during a very tumultuous time within the Jewish community and this gradual weakening of the family and community strikes home with a force that begs us to consider the strength of our own families and communities. The powerful dialogue is enlivened with rich, classical songs such as “If I Were a Rich Man”, “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”, and “To Life (L’Chaim!)”.
